Answers to Your EC2 Reporting Questions
Cloudwatch allows you to track an instance's I/O, but the power of EC2 is with the simple scaling of applications. You may not be as concerned with a single instance's I/O, but how much data is going through a certain type of server in your EC2 infrastructure, such as an application layer. Using Easy Insight with EC2 Cloudwatch monitoring, you can easily slice the data by any of the other dimensions—such as image ID or security group to identify a cluster of servers.
Part of the Bigger Picture
Cloudwatch let you see I/O requests, CPU utilization and bandwidth—but there is more information you can get from your infrastructure to add to this. By grabbing data from your database on memory usage or # of slow queries, and grabbing statistics on the number of concurrent connections to your application servers, you can quickly see when a specific area of your infrastructure isn't performing where it's supposed to be, and take a proactive approach to fixing issues in your infrastructure.
